Private cement manufacturers will take a positive decision on reducing cement prices and convey it to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi by January 10.
Representing the cement industry, N. Srinivasan, managing director of India Cements, called on Mr. Karunanidhi on Monday and told him he would consult other owners and take a decision.
Stating this, an official release said the meeting was sequel to the steps taken by the State Government to bring down the price.
Asked to comment, Mr. Srinivasan said he had nothing more to add.
The cement price issue has been bothering the State Government and several parties, both in the Assembly and outside, have been urging it to intervene. The prices, which were in the range of Rs.136-180 a bag in February 2006, went up to Rs.224 a year later. They are now hovering around Rs.240-260 a bag.
